KBB REVIEW: The 2025 BMW X1 is one of our highest-rated subcompact luxury SUVs. We like its practicality, quality, and how it drives.

CAR & DRIVER REVIEW: The X1 may represent the most compact of BMW’s lofty SUV ladder, but it’s plenty satisfying to drive, particularly in the xDrive28i trim. Its tidy dimensions, excellent chassis tuning, and pair of spunky turbocharged four-cylinder engines make for an entertaining little utility. The model’s 241-hp engine is more than adequate, and backed by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive. The X1’s cabin is clean and techy, with a digital gauge display and center touchscreen housed behind a big piece of curved glass through which you control BMW’s iDrive 9 infotainment system and its wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. The X1 is spacious front and rear for such a small SUV, and although you get more space in a Mercedes-Benz GLB-class, the Benz can’t match the X1’s athletic character. As one of our favourites in its segment, the BMW X1 has earned a spot on our EDITORS’ CHOICE LIST FOR 2025.

Winning Interior – From its cool, well-designed interior to its generous cargo space, the X1 beats the competition. The materials are appropriately premium, and the fit is high-quality, while the seats (especially the front seats) are sufficiently comfortable and supportive for long trips. The rear seats split and fold 40/20/40, which is a little more versatile than the usual 60/40 arrangement. The 37-inch rear legroom is excellent for the class. And there’s 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, emphasizing the X1’s roominess.

Decidedly BMW Exterior – There’s no disputing the X1’s BMW-ness, thanks to that prominent double grille. For those who are already in the Like camp, that’s great. We’re here with you. The X1 probably won’t change any minds on looks alone, though. Fortunately, it has many other attributes.

OUR FAVOURITE FEATURES AND TECH:

Infotainment system – User-friendly and with the ability to understand voice commands given in natural speech, this system includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, and the capability for remote software upgrades.

Live Cockpit Plus – This is the name given to the curved one-piece unit that incorporates the driver’s instrument cluster and the infotainment display. It’s standard in the X1 and contributes to the cabin’s tech-rich feel.

LED headlights with cornering lights – We particularly like the cornering lights that follow the steering and illuminate bends better than regular headlights.

THE VERDICT:
The X1 delights with its combination of athleticism, practicality, and upscale appointments. The 2025 X1 xDrive28i remains a segment leader, offering a compelling blend of practicality and luxury-sport performance. It is best suited for those looking for a premium, small crossover that does not compromise on driving enjoyment or space.
