The 2024 Subaru Impreza RS marks the return of the iconic “RS” badge, serving as the sport-focused, top-tier trim for the fully redesigned sixth-generation Impreza. For 2024, Subaru has eliminated the sedan body style entirely, offering the Impreza strictly as a 5-door hatchback. The 2024 Subaru Impreza RS brings back a legendary nameplate as a peppy, value-packed hatchback. Featuring a 182-hp 2.5L engine, Symmetrical AWD, and sport-tuned suspension, it’s an ideal, all-weather daily driver for buyers who want hot-hatch looks and agility without the extreme price tag of a WRX. The RS sits at the top of the Impreza lineup. The RS Package adds luxury upgrades such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a power moonroof, and an upgraded Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Performance & Drivetrain
• Upgraded Engine: It features a larger 2.5-litre SUBARU BOXER 4-cylinder engine, delivering 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. This provides an 18% bump in power over the base 2.0-litre models.
• No Manual Transmission: The manual gearbox has been completely retired. Power goes through a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a simulated 8-speed manual mode controlled by paddle shifters.
• Handling Hardware: It comes standard with Subaru’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and inherits a dual-pinion steering rack derived from the WRX for sharper, more agile cornering.
RS Exterior & Interior Styling
• Aggressive Look: The exterior is distinguished by 18-inch black finish alloy wheels, dark grey/black trim accents on the grille and side skirts, premium LED steering-responsive headlights, and distinct RS badging.
• Cabin Upgrades: Inside, you will find premium black and red cloth sports seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum alloy pedals, and gunmetal dash accents.
• Technology: A prominent 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen dominates the dashboard, featuring standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside a wireless phone charger.
Safety & Fuel Economy
• EyeSight Safety: Standard safety tech includes the latest iteration of Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, adding a wider field of view to catch pedestrians and cyclists sooner. It packages adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and pre-collision braking.
• Efficiency: It is rated at roughly 9.0L / 100 km city and 7.2L / 100 km highway (approx. 26 city / 33 highway MPG).
Expert Review & Consumer Consensus
• According to road tests from automotive reviewers at Edmunds and MotorTrend, the 2024 Impreza RS is praised as a highly practical, sure-footed alternative to compact SUVs. Reviewers appreciate the ultra-stiff chassis and excellent performance in inclement weather.
Great Resale Values
Traditionally, the Subaru Impreza has come second only to the Honda Civic in the resale values stakes. Strong resale value can mean more money for your next down payment.
Driving the Subaru Impreza
KBB’s Andy Bornhop sampled the new 2024 Subaru Impreza 2.5 on the winding roads surrounding Paso Robles in California. Andy reports:
Consider me impressed. This new Impreza is significantly more refined. The naturally aspirated 2.5 in the 2024 Subaru Impreza RS works well. It’s smooth and totally relaxed on the highway, and the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), aided by shifters behind the steering wheel, does a good job of replicating the shift feel of a conventional automatic. In sport mode, the response is especially sharp.
Perhaps more significantly, the refined new Impreza RS boasts outstanding ride quality. Because the new chassis is 10% stiffer, Subaru was able to use softer springs and firmer shock absorbers. The result? A practical compact hatchback that’s remarkably comfortable on long trips but quite capable on twisty pavement.
Indeed, with steering borrowed from the sporty WRX and excellent brakes, the Impreza RS corners with enviable confidence, and then powers out with excellent composure, aided by torque vectoring and an AWD system that sends more power to the rear wheels under hard acceleration.
Even with the optional sunroof, the RS has excellent headroom, and the red-bolstered seats are upholstered in a grippy fabric that holds you well in enthusiastic driving. What’s more, it’s a snap to wirelessly connect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the portrait-oriented 11.6-inch infotainment screen features large icons that are easy to find and press while you’re on the move. Also positive: Subaru still employs easy-to-use knobs for the volume and station controls.
Our Favourite Features and Tech:
All-wheel drive – A Subaru hallmark and with active torque vectoring to deliver the right amount of drive to each wheel for optimum grip and stability.
Infotainment system – Subaru fits an 11.6-inch touchscreen for the first time in an Impreza. It’s accompanied by wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration.
Keyless entry – This is accompanied by a push-button start. Sure, a lot of cars have this feature nowadays, but it’s always a thrill to press that button and fire up the engine.
RS model – Rolling on 18-inch alloy wheels and a sport suspension, wearing its own exterior treatments, and producing 182 horsepower, the RS is the most entertaining 2024 Impreza.
Harman Kardon audio – Harman Kardon is a high-quality audio company supplying companies like BMW. A 10-speaker HK system is offered in the 2024 Impreza RS.
