This new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is 15.1” longer than the current Grand Cherokee, and it has a wheelbase stretched by seven inches. This allows the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L to comfortably accommodate three rows of seats. With center-row captain’s chairs, the new Grand Cherokee L seats six.

While we see the Grand Cherokee L primarily as a luxurious family hauler, it still has off-road chops.

Over the years, I’ve driven hundreds of two- and three-row SUVs, and I’ve found that even when two-row models offer plenty of room for passengers, they often aren’t up to the job of transporting four or five people’s worth of stuff for a weeklong road trip without adding a rooftop box. That’s the general benefit of going with a three-row SUV even if you don’t need the extra seats, the added cargo space makes these vehicles much more useful.

This Jeep is quiet and roomy, and the front view is excellent. It has an in-command—but not overly high—driving position, and the heated leather seats are supportive and comfortable on long stints. Items you touch — such as the knurled metal rotary knob of the gear selector, the thick-rim steering wheel, and even the open-pore walnut trim — all have a high-quality feel. The Grand Cherokee L’s center console features a metal gearshift dial, and paddles behind the steering wheel let drivers upshift or downshift without taking their hands off the wheel.

The new Grand Cherokee L offers five selectable driving modes (Sport, Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, Rock), but Auto, the default setting, works just fine in most situations.

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L looks sophisticated and handcrafted inside, with an angled instrument panel that pushes the driver back for added spaciousness. The 10.25-inch digital gauge display and 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment screen are both beautifully integrated into the dash.

With the L’s more family-focused mission, it comes with a host of advanced driver-assistance features: adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors with cross-path detection, lane-keeping assist, and collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

For families who feel they’ve outgrown the Grand Cherokee or want something that’s more premium inside, or more capable, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L hits the sweet spot.

With three rows, serious capability, and unexpected luxury, the Grand Cherokee L might just beat its costlier Wagoneer sibling. In short, we’re impressed.
