The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 is a highly capable midsize 4×4 truck that balances everyday drivability with rugged off-road capability. This eye-catching truck is both stylish and practical. Designed with best-in-class tailgate functionality, plus unsurpassed max towing capacity, the 2024 Colorado offers more of what you need to work hard, so you can do more of what you love – play hard.
MOTOR TREND REVIEW: Not everybody needs a giant half-ton pickup. Midsize trucks are an excellent option for buyers seeking an easier-to-drive pickup that’s more efficient than a full-sizer but still has the convenience of a bed. For folks who don’t plan on towing 13,000 pounds anytime soon, Chevrolet builds the Colorado, the previous generation of which earned our TRUCK OF THE YEAR award twice. Following up on these wins, the current Colorado is our 2024 Truck of the Year. The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado competes against other midsize options, including the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon, and Nissan Frontier.
The redesigned Colorado is our 2024 Truck of the Year, thanks in part to its strong value proposition and renewed focus on off-road capability. The journey to the top was competitive, with the Colorado triumphing over formidable contenders like the Ford F-150 Raptor R, GMC Hummer EV 3X, Ford Super Duty, and Chevy’s own Silverado HD. Yet this victory isn’t entirely unexpected, considering the previous-generation Colorado clinched our Truck of the Year award in 2015 and again in 2016.
What We Think
We had high expectations for last year’s redesigned Colorado as the successor to a truck twice worthy of our Truck of the Year honors. By our measures, the new truck is a well-executed sequel. The styling is tougher and more distinctive, interior fittings feel much more premium, and responsive infotainment on a large display brings the Colorado into the modern era.
Our FIRST DRIVE revealed that even with a turbo-four in place of the last-gen truck’s six-cylinder gas and four-cylinder diesel options, the Colorado is plenty quick. The experience is notably quieter and easier with the more powerful tune of the same engine. On-road performance was also noteworthy in the standard Colorado, as it navigates twisty mountain roads with the “cornering and composure of vehicles half this size. ”
Depending on your needs, you may be dismayed by Colorado’s single crew-cab, short-bed configuration or its gas-only four-cylinder engine lineup. Based on our experience, though, this may be one of the best trucks in the midsize segment.
CAR & DRIVER: The pickup truck is as American as apple pie, and there are few sweeter than the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado—a 2024 EDITORS’ CHOICE award winner. Built for driving to work as reliably as it can drive through mud, the Colorado’s chassis and equipment offerings support even the bravest off-road shenanigans. All Colorados are powered exclusively by a turbocharged 2.7-litre inline-four engine and an eight-speed automatic. With up to 7700 pounds of maximum towing capacity, the Colorado can haul campers, boats, and snow machines with ease.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo:
The new-generation Colorado made a leap in interior design. Every Colorado is a four-door crew cab. Inside, there’s a new center console, the shifter moves closer to the passenger side of the cab, and the cupholders are located directly in front of the center console instead of being tucked opposite the gear selector. A new gauge cluster, infotainment screen, and steering wheel complete the updated design. Overall, headroom has dropped by an inch versus the last Colorado, but legroom and shoulder space are roughly the same. Taking a page from the Honda Ridgeline book of tricks, Z71 models come standard with a shallow, lockable 45-inch-wide storage box in the tailgate.
Infotainment and Connectivity:
All Colorados get a large 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Colorado also gets wireless phone-charging capability but still retains USB ports should your devices require them. Available as a subscription service, the Colorado can be equipped with Google Built-In to handle navigation, music, and other vehicle functions personalized through your Google account. Every Colorado comes standard with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
THE VERDICT: Chevy used a serrated blade to trim off chunks of nonsense the previous Colorado toted without butchering what made its mid-size one of the best: a well-rounded truck with a kick-ass off-road version.
