The 2022 Mazda CX-9 isn’t like other mainstream midsize 3-row SUVs/crossovers. It looks, feels, and drives like it belongs in the luxury bracket. The main area where it overlaps with many of its rivals is pricing: it costs less than the Honda Pilot and falls within the same price range as the Toyota Highlander.

THREE ROWS OF SOPHISTICATION:
The interior of the Mazda CX-9 offers sophisticated details to indulge you and your passengers throughout all three rows. Up front, both the driver and front passenger will enjoy heated, ventilated seats, helping keep you at the ideal temperature year-round. For the second row, captain’s chairs feature a convenient centre console. The second row of the CX-9 is fantastic for kids and adults alike, with sliding and reclining bucket seats on the top-tier Signature. They’re heated, of course, and the second row enjoys its own climate control zone and manually-operated sunshades on the doors. Plus, everyone on board can enjoy their devices longer, thanks to USB chargers throughout the second and third rows.

CAR & DRIVER REVIEW:
Combining a handsome exterior, a near-luxury interior, and a surprisingly fun-to-drive nature, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is the three-row crossover for buyers who’d rather be driving a Miata but can’t live with a car that’s so space-challenged. The CX-9’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides good acceleration, but its chassis is what delivers its trademark driving verve. The CX-9’s crisp steering and sporty cornering attitude remind us more of a sports sedan than an SUV, which earns it an EDITORS’ CHOICE AWARD. Inside, occupants are treated to a premium cabin, but the third row is a bit cramped, in comparison to roomier rivals such as the Hyundai Palisade and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Still, this trade-off seems worth it to us as driving enthusiasts, and we expect other like-minded folks will see it the same way.

VERDICT – With the CX-9, Mazda applies its hallmark athleticism to a three-row family hauler with enticing results. The CX-9 is clearly the driving enthusiast’s family hauler; surprisingly light on its feet, it often feels as if you’re driving a smaller SUV. The suspension is firm, but it’s still supple enough for riding over rough stretches of road. The steering, while not as communicative as other Mazdas, still imparts vigour that’s missing from other crossovers. The firm suspension and accurate steering culminate in superior cornering control.
