The best Mazda hybrid performance meets the most spaciously designed 2-row SUV to date. Discover the sport-like performance of the luxuriously appointed, first-ever CX-70 Plug-in Hybrid.
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a sporty, stylish 5-passenger midsize SUV with luxe interior appointments. The new-for-2025 Mazda CX-70 is effectively a CX-90 without the third row of seats. It’s the same size, features the same sheet metal, and offers the same unique blend of mainstream affordability and Euro luxury. However, the CX-70 is a truer competitor to mainstream midsize SUV offerings like the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and its powertrains and interior furnishings lean toward midsize offerings from luxury brands.
High-End Interior:
To our eyes, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 has a more decadent, more attractive interior than any mainstream-badged midsize SUV. It features convenience features such as remote-folding second-row seats and a rear cargo area with clever storage solutions like cubbies, bag hooks, and an underfloor compartment for out-of-sight storage. A rear power liftgate will make filling the cargo space easier.
Elegant Lines:
Aside from some styling tweaks, such as the front and back, the CX-70 is the same size and shape as the CX-90. Given that the CX-90 is one of the most attractive midsize SUVs on the market—luxury-badged entries included—it’s a wonderful melding of substance and panache.
Driving Canada Review: Whenever I test a three-row SUV, the first thing I do is fold down the third row. I can’t remember the last time I carried enough passengers to need them, and with that row down, I usually get more cargo space than in a two-row. The Mazda CX-70, an all-new model for 2025, fills the bill for that.
The CX-70 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) has a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and a full hybrid system. When plugged in and charged, it can drive for a rated 42 kilometres on electricity alone; when that depletes, it reverts to conventional hybrid operation, automatically switching between gasoline, electricity, or a combination, depending on driving conditions. Mazda’s signature is its fun-to-drive handling. It’s obviously a commuter sport-ute and not a sports car, but it’s responsive and feels solid rather than heavy. On a curve or a rough road, it can apply a smidgen of brake pressure to one wheel, stabilizing the rear suspension so the vehicle retains its composure. The steering is nicely-weighted, the turning circle is very tight, and overall, it’s very good from behind the wheel.
Final thoughts:
A plus-sized crossover for those who are sure they’ll never need a third row.
With its three-row length without that third row, the CX-70 is a niche vehicle; it could be the ideal configuration. This big crossover hits the upscale mark Mazda is trying to reach. 21” wheels and a smattering of blacked-out trim seal the deal. Take a CX-90, remove the third row, and you get this all-new sport-utility.
The CX-70 aims to balance indulgence with power – and does so as a shining example of Mazda’s less-is-more design philosophy. A comfortable cabin, expansive cargo capacity and lavish interior features reflect the care and passion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
