Rinker’s R2 offers loads of features in a stylish package as well as a bitchin’ logo that sets it apart from Rinker’s mainstream bowriders.
The oldest American boat brand in continuous production, Rinker boats have been bringing families together out on the water, quietly getting the job done since the 1945. Some might say a bowrider is a bowrider is a bowrider. We tend to disagree. While there are similarities among all bowriders, there are also differences that, shall we say, separate the men from the boys.
The 232 rides high and sits deep, with lots of tucked away comforts of home. The R2 maximizes interior space and does a great job of delivering the room of a much larger bowrider. The R2 will grab your attention in more ways than one, starting with the hot graphics and awesome wakeboard tower.
The double gas-shocked sun pad doubles as an engine-room hatch and opens into a ridiculously clean engine compartment where hoses, battery cables and fluid levels are easily accessed. A cooler fits under the starboard passenger seat in a-floor recess to eliminate rattles. The helm has two rows of gauges tucked in deep, protected from the sun’s glare, with accessory switches aligned to the right.
From bow to stern this is a terrific, full-featured, multi-purpose craft that boasts some surprising amenities for its price tag. It is a superb watersport towboat that also handles rough water well.
In essence, the R2 is a tricked-out 232 Captiva bowrider with a heavy emphasis on watersports. The R2 package includes everything wake-popping adrenaline junkies need. Features aimed at amping up wakeboard action include a custom folding tower with board racks and a large watersports mirror. Tunes are more than covered with two coaxial tower speakers, cockpit speakers, subwoofer, a Sony stereo, a transom stereo remote and Sirius satellite radio. Rounding out the package is Rinker’s R-series graphics, which add an aggressive edge to the look of the boat.
It’s also important to remember that this is a big 12-person bowrider with an extended swim platform. This capacity to show an extended crowd a good time will prevent you from having to leave anyone behind at the dock. There are a number of features inside the boat that will also enhance watersports activities. Storage for all your toys, ropes and PFDs is important, and the R2 includes a long and deep ski locker in the sole with a durable roto-molded plastic liner that provides a finished look and takes a beating. There are similar liners in the storage areas under the bow seats as well as in the wide storage trunk just forward of the swim platform, which is a perfect place for soggy PFDs, ropes and gloves. A deep and wide walk-through transom makes for easy access between the cockpit and swim platform, and there’s a transom shower, a pair of stainless steel cupholders and a foldaway boarding ladder for convenience.
In the cockpit there’s L-shaped seating in addition to a pair of swivel bucket seats with flip-up bolsters. Under the center rear bench seat is a dedicated area for a portable cooler and a pair of cupholders is located behind the driver’s bucket seat. There’s also a dedicated trash receptacle with a small hatch aft to starboard just forward of the large sunpad. All the way in the bow there is comfortable seating for more passengers, a windscreen to control ventilation to the cockpit and stainless steel grabrails and cupholders.
Overall: Probably the most important thing to know about Rinker is that it works to focus on building high-performance high-quality boats.
The Captiva 232 is a great boat to step up to when you find your family has grown or you need more room than your smaller bowrider can deliver.
