The 2023 Atlas Cross Sport sure knows how to make an entrance. Combining the capability of an SUV with the sleek and sporty lines of a coupe, this bold, showstopping SUV is in a class all its own. The coveted R-Line Black package available on the Highline trim, with brushed stainless steel pedals, a leather-wrapped heated sport steering wheel, and massive 20″ Trenton black alloy wheels, really completes the look.

Don’t let its standout style fool you: This is one seriously capable SUV. The Atlas Cross Sport seamlessly marries the sleek and stylish profile of a coupe, with the larger footprint of an SUV. With the Atlas Cross Sport, Volkswagen takes a solid concept – the high-selling, sturdy, and roomy Atlas SUV – and gives it a nip here and a tuck there for a more sporty-looking, more unique take on the idea.

Undeniably good-looking, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a slick two-row “crossover coupe” interpretation of the automaker’s three-row Atlas SUV. Like its bigger brother, it excels in cargo and passenger space as well as curb appeal and feature availability.

The Volkswagen Atlas has been one of the company’s best-selling models. It’s that success, and German Automakers’ fondness for “crossover coupes” that spawned the Atlas Cross Sport, a sleeker and more cosmopolitan two-row version of the family-friendly three-row Atlas. It shares all of its mechanical pieces and most of its configuration options with the three-row version. Though it’s down a row of seats from the standard Atlas, the Cross Sport’s two rows are comfortable and spacious, and because there’s no need to make way for the wayback, the Cross Sport’s second row is appreciably roomier than that of the Atlas. Five people can legitimately ride in decent comfort. And there’s plenty of room for kids and kid seats.

The front buckets are deep and supportive, and they offer good outward visibility.

With the back seats upright, the Atlas Cross Sport offers 40.3 cubic feet of space. That’s way above average for the segment, and VW offers a hands-free power liftgate to make accessing the space even easier. The wide cargo floor and friendly ride height make loading and unloading a breeze, and it’s tall enough to accommodate larger items.

The Atlas Cross Sport makes up for its lack of three-row utility with a very attractive exterior design. VW nailed the proportions, avoiding what could’ve been an awkward shortening of a decent-looking three-row SUV. It’s got the right wheel sizes and stance, giving it a beefy, muscular look. The result is a mainstream midsize SUV with one of the ultimate luxuries — space. The Atlas Cross Sport is roomy and comfortable, yet with the kind of panache that its 7-seater VW Atlas relative cannot attain.
