The Atlas sets the bar among midsize rivals for offering adult-size passenger space in the third row and usable stowage behind it. For moms searching for the biggest SUV available without sizing up into the full-size segment (think Suburban), the Atlas is the best choice in terms of usable space, capability and value. It also offers modern technology, clean styling, driving dynamics, ample power and AWD.
The Volkswagen Atlas is an SUV with a very roomy 3-row interior with seating for up to seven. The third row is spacious and easy to access, even with the standard bench seat in the second row, which can fold and slide forward with child seats installed. The third row gets easier to access in the 6-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs.
The cargo area is also quite roomy, even when all three rows of seats are in place. The Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which increases to 96.8 cubic feet when all of the back seats are folded down. Those numbers are among the best in class for cargo space.
In many ways, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is why big and boxy SUVs get a bad rap, but it’s also a solid alternative to a minivan. With an expansive cargo area and three-row seating that accommodates adults—comfortably—in the way back, the Atlas is better at family transport than many other mid-size utes.
The Atlas provides the right mix of comfort and gusto to do exactly what the three-row SUV is meant to do: school drop off and pick up, carpool players and their equipment between sports fields, cart all the gear (and kids) to the beach and sufficiently handle Costco runs. Its spacious interior, cargo flexibility and available AWD also make it a winner for trips to the slopes. Even if the nearest lift is 200 miles away, the Atlas delivers a confident and calm road trip demeanor with room for passengers to spread out, keep busy or snooze.
Millennial Mom’s Review: This spacious family-hauler meets the expectations set by its lofty name with a very smooth drive. And similar to the Titan Atlas, who bore the weight of the heavens on his shoulder, this Atlas carried the burden of being the brand’s first three-row, family-friendly SUV just a few years ago. It’s got some stiff competition, but it’s worth a look if you’re in the market for a three-row SUV. It’s a comfortable, safe, and all-around great family vehicle.
