The Honda Civic has been one of the top three best-selling passenger cars in the U.S. since 1973, with over 12 million sold. The current Civic, a regular KBB Best Buy award winner, has been the best-selling model in America with first-time buyers. Compact, practical, and unpretentious five-doors like the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback are precisely what you might envision when you think of the ideal first car.

With this all-new 2022 Honda Civic, the company has revisited some “timeless design concepts” from previous Civics. Such as a low hood, front fenders, and beltline create an expansive greenhouse and a superb outward view. Style and performance take on a whole new meaning when combined with the versatility of the Civic Hatchback. Its sleek, streamlined exterior makes a bold statement from every angle. And its 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback gives you an unexpected edge on interior seating and cargo space.

A more streamlined interior design debuts in the 2022 Civic, with cleaner lines and a dashboard featuring a full-width honeycomb-patterned mesh design element that cleverly hides the air vents. A more comprehensive center console appears less cluttered than the outgoing model’s and features a large, deep bin ahead of the shift lever for stashing smartphones, keys, and road-trip snacks.

Make no mistake – the previous Civic was good. But where that version still felt like an economy car, this is a fine impersonation of a premium one. The car itself has some serious substance, eschewing the tin-toy vibe typical of the segment. It’s not that the 2022 Civic is especially heavy, but it feels solid and planted while managing to carve tight lines when prodded.

The VERDICT:
The redesigned Civic benefits from better aesthetics while still offering athletic handling and a well-balanced ride. Whether considering the 2022 Civic Hatchback as your first or fifth car, it’s an admirably well-rounded automobile. It’s more than reasonably nice to drive, perfectly practical and comfy, economical to run (if not all that economical to buy), designed with restraint, and loaded with useful tech.

Honda’s small car, regardless of door count, is one of the absolute best vehicles in the industry right now, and I’m certainly not alone in thinking this. The Civic sedan was voted by a panel of more than 20 AutoTrader.ca experts as this year’s Best Overall Car and make no mistake – the transformation to a hatchback has absolutely not made it worse.
