Unlike the Nissan NV, Ford Transit, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the ProMaster deploys front-wheel drive, resulting in good traction in snow. The Ram ProMaster van’s particular virtues include a muscular V6 engine, maximum cargo width, a tall standard roof, and a tight turning circle — a huge asset in maneuverability.
The ProMaster excels in the areas of ride comfort, stability, and maneuverability. Large front-row windows and a massive raked windshield provide good forward vision. The rearview camera is a boon, and the side windows improve peripheral vision.
The 3.6-liter V6 develops 260 lb-ft of torque. Torque is the force that gets things moving. This is a decent amount, useful for towing and hauling. It doesn’t struggle when the van is loaded, and the 6-speed automatic transmission keeps the power coming when required.
The ProMaster’s front-drive layout makes an important contribution to traction and stability. A big commercial van is more about utility and capability than comfort, but the Ram ProMaster delivers in this important area.
Factor in the racks, shelves, and workbenches available from upfitters, and buyers can create a van for virtually any purpose. For some, the low load floor and high ceiling are good enough reasons to choose the ProMaster.
SUMMARY: Perhaps more than anything else, the ProMaster is built to be big. Ram’s commercial van has huge interior capacity, with the cargo model providing hundreds of cubic feet of space. It’s built on a front-wheel-drive platform, an unusual layout for large commercial vans. The ProMaster went on sale for 2014 and is positioned as a highly utilitarian commercial option for individuals and fleets.
What We Think (Motor Trend):
Heavy-duty commercial vehicles are almost always rear- wheel drive—could front-wheel drive have a place in the game? Ram thinks so. Its ProMaster commercial van has front-wheel drive as its sole layout. The idea is that the absence of rear-drive componentry can enable a lower load floor and provide greater utility.
In our experience, it works. A look at the ProMaster’s specs proves it has huge capacity, and the powertrain is surprisingly successful. Even with its V-6 engine the van accelerates well and provides grunt for hauling cargo around.
The ProMaster was already a strong value, and it becomes more appealing for 2021 with its updated technology and driver assist offerings. It’s still straightforward and utilitarian. But for drivers focused on maximum utility, the ProMaster offers it thanks to—it’s front-wheel-drive underpinnings.
