We’ll tell you one thing: this is not your typical soft-road mall-assault vehicle!

Jeep faithful’s are loathe to accept anything less than superior all-season all-weather all-terrain all-the-time capability — with all the modern amenities, comfort, and technology of their wimpy rivals.

Unlike the bulk of Jeep’s softer competition, there’s a rare V6 option for the Cherokee, the 3.2L Pentastar — mated to a nine-speed automatic — that puts out a robust 271 hp. The Pentastar feels right at home, especially in the Trailhawk, the most macho and off-road-capable of all the Cherokees.

We’re drawn to the extroverted look of the Trailhawk, with its the matte-black hood topping, the black plastic moulding, the tow hooks, and the aggressive tires. It’s not a combination for shy, bookish types. Think Eddie-Bauer-outdoorsy instead, especially given that Jeep certifies the Trailhawk as “Trail Rated,” meaning it will tackle off-road trails that will leave much of its competition marooned. Its 4×4 setup comes with Selec-Terrain traction control system, complete with a nifty console-mounted controller that allows up to five customized settings of Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Rock.

With this tough look, it might be expected the Trailhawk will deliver a rough driving experience. Yet, unless you expect Lexus-like solitude and smoothness — and if you do, then you have no business even considering the Jeep — everything comes together cohesively. Yes, it has legit off-road bona fides, but it is still a sport-ute, with a ride that’s firm but forgiving enough to absorb the impacts of potholes and frost heaves without punishing driver or passengers. And its handling, with well-weighted steering is competitive with its rivals.

Moving inside, the dash area is laid out simply and logically, with the major controls front and centre. The 8.4-inch Uconnect multimedia screen dominates the middle portion, controlling the audio, climate, navigation, Bluetooth, heated/ventilated seats, and more. It’s extremely user-friendly, with large, easy-to-read graphics. A reworking of the Cherokee’s list of standard features for 2021 sees the Trailhawk add a heated steering wheel as well as heated front seats, along with remote start and windshield wiper de-icer.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk has Jeep’s most sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. It also rides higher than a regular Cherokee and includes protective plating, tow hooks, and specialist off-road tires. More than just looking the part, the Trailhawk is designed to wade through up to 20 inches of water, tackle rugged boulder-strewn courses, and push through deep snow. Throw in the 4,500 pounds of towing capacity with the V6, and arguments in favor of a 2021 Cherokee become stronger.

The Cherokee, in Trailhawk garb, is far more distinct, bolder, and with trail-conquering Jeep machismo and smooth V6 power. It stands out. Unapologetically.

FAST FACTS: Can the 2021 Jeep Cherokee go off-road? Yes. However, only the Cherokee Trailhawk model is what Jeep calls Trail Rated, meaning it can tackle a series of tough off-road and winter-weather obstacles such as deep water, deep snow, rocks, and loose sand. The Trailhawk also has a more advanced all-wheel-drive system as well as protective skidplates, tow hooks, and approach and departure angles better suited to off-roading.

What We Think:
Combining everyday usability with real off-road capabilities, the Jeep Cherokee is built to suit diverse preferences. On the road, the Cherokee is comfortable thanks to its supportive seats and smooth ride. There’s plenty of legroom in every seat, and Jeep’s Uconnect infotainment system is among the favorites for its responsiveness and ease of use. The Cherokee makes a nice road tripper, especially when fitted with adaptive cruise control. When fitted with AWD, the Cherokee lives up to its Jeep heritage. In loose conditions, it shows off rally-car reflexes, and the Trailhawk model is the best off-roaders in the compact crossover segment – it’s the most real-deal capable compact SUV…period! It’s a Jeep.
