It’s the largest and most versatile Subaru ever, with three rows and seating for up to seven. It’s packed with advanced technologies, from active safety systems to entertainment features. And you’ll always drive with confidence, thanks to legendary Subaru quality, durability and reliability.
The 2020 Subaru Ascent with family-friendly safety features such as an alert system that reminds the driver to check the rear seat before leaving the vehicle, is exactly the kind of clever thinking that makes the Ascent the quintessential 3-row/7-passenger SUV. In addition to its sporty styling and handsome interior, the Ascent forgoes the traditional 6-cylinder engine in favor of a potent turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers big horsepower and good fuel economy. Standard all-wheel drive gives the Ascent a leg up over the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander, while its attractive pricing, strong resale and standard features make it a better value than the Chevy Traverse or Ford Explorer.
Driving: The Subaru had an easy time getting up to speed and showed no signs of running out of steam on grades or twisty roads. You’ll have plenty of power for highway passing, and this engine serves as a good compromise of power, capability and fuel economy. Straight-line driving is relaxed and comfortable, the interior is quiet, and the seats have the right support for use on day-long drives. Visibility is quite good in all directions, plus the A-pillar is narrow enough to make room for a larger glass area, which allows the driver to see more of the road at the front corners.
The new Ascent also shows signs of sportiness, with its handling, steering and braking. On twisty roads, the handling and quick steering response make this 3-row SUV feel agile, like a smaller vehicle.
Interior Comfort: The 2020 Subaru Ascent has an interior that is warm and welcoming, yet highly practical. Controls are a mix of easy-to-reach buttons and knobs. Niceties include 3-zone climate control, seat heaters and a panoramic moonroof. The third row is easy to access, thanks to doors that open wide and a pleasantly low step-in height.
The cargo area has a nice, wide opening that makes loading gear a snap, as well as a power liftgate. There’s even a storage cubby under the load floor where you can stow the cargo area cover when it’s not in use.
ADVANCED SAFETY – While some Ascent competitors offer partial or fully optional driver assists, Subaru’s EyeSight is includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warning and a head-up display warning. The Premier upgrades include blind-spot detection, reverse automatic braking, rear cross-traffic assist, a front-view monitor and auto high-beam assist.
X-MODE with Hill Descent Control: “X” marks added capability for any driver on most any road. With a push of a button, X-MODE takes control of the engine, transmission, AWD, brakes and other components to help you safely navigate through bad roads and slippery surfaces with maximum confidence. For challenging descents, Hill Descent Control enhances confidence down the steepest of hills you’ll encounter by providing constant, controlled momentum so the driver can focus more on steering the vehicle—and less on braking.
The 2020 Ascent is more than capable of getting big groups to the bigger outdoors, thanks to a combination of proven core technology and the latest in all-road/all-weather performance systems. It features an Direct-Injection Turbocharged (DIT) 2.4L SUBARU BOXER engine paired with the legendary Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive. The Subaru Global Platform uses high-strength steel to offer excellent crash protection along with a quiet, comfortable ride. And because the Ascent can tow up to 2,270 kg, it has 220 mm of ground clearance and features X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, you have more destination options to consider.
Fully 98% of Subaru vehicles sold in Canada over the last 10 years are still on the road today.
VERDICT: Despite a horde of competitive three-row SUVs, the 2020 Ascent stands out for its satisfying content and Subaru heritage. A compelling three-row SUV that upholds the Subaru tradition.
