2020 RAM 1500 LONGHORN. WELCOME TO LUXURY, TECHNOLOGY AND CAPABILITY – attention to detail is what separates Ram 1500 from the rest.
RAM 1500 MEASURES UP: Largest-in-Class 12” touchscreen media centre, Class-Exclusive reclining rear seat with eight-degree recline, 12-way power seats, including four-way lumbar adjust and three levels of adjustable heat/ ventilation, Best-in-Class rear-seat legroom, Rear flat load floor for increased legroom and greater in-cabin cargo space, Reconfigurable front centre console
The 2020 Ram 1500 is the luxury car of pickup trucks—and one of the strongest in work-day chores, too.
Redesigned for last year, the Ram 1500 has toned down the massive big-rig style of past trucks, opting instead for a smoother, more aerodynamic front end. The cabin has graduated to a new tax bracket, and features some of the finest materials in any American vehicle we’ve driven, pickup truck or otherwise. A massive, Tesla-esque 12.0-inch screen can be used with work gloves to set everything from climate settings to Spotify playlists via the standard Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interface.
The interior of this truck is easily one of the most luxurious in the segment. The quality and attention to detail is undeniable. The real wood accents are gorgeous with a grain I have not seen before, and the burned-in Longhorn stamp on the glove compartment and stamped metal inlay on the center armrest are a really nice touch. The leather is soft to the touch, and smells even better. With eight-way power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats, it’s easy to find the perfect driving position, and impossible to be uncomfortable.
Style is subjective, but the Ram was always an imposing machine to behold and I’m glad to report that nothing has changed. I personally prefer its design to the other trucks out there. With the liberal usage of chrome, it looks quite appealing—especially thanks to the plethora of stamped logos all around the truck.
Chrysler’s Uconnect system is the best infotainment systems on the market, especially when it comes to trucks. And paired with this 12.0-inch screen it jumps the ranks even higher. When using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, it splits the screen so you can still the rest of the system. With all of the most important icons laid out at the bottom of the screen, it’s easy to access the controls you need.
Two USB connections in the front and two more in the rear make it ideal for a long road trip. No fighting ensues over who needs to charge their phone the most!
The 5.7-liter V8 Hemi is an incredible engine. It’s smooth and quiet when you want, yet mean and powerful when you need it to be. With 395 horsepower, and 540 lb-ft of torque, the power is very linear and it has a satisfying growl when you really hammer it. The 8-speed transmission is incredibly smooth, and quick. Even when hauling a trailer, it always put itself in the right gear without shuffling to maintain the right RPM.
It has a towing capacity of 12,750 lb, and a payload capacity of 2300 lb; more than enough for any recreational use, and still plenty for most job sights.
The Verdict: Anyone looking for a premium do-it-all pickup truck should have the Laramie on their list of considerations.
MOTOR TREND: The Ram 1500 was our 2019 MotorTrend Truck of the Year, and it carries forward those qualities into the 2020 model year. We loved its best-in-class sophistication, its cabin, and its technology, stating that every Ram has the tools needed for both work and play, and that the brand has done its homework on picking the benchmarks for both design and packaging. This is the best full-size truck on the market.
