REVIEW: Why is this truck so good?
Several factors make this truck stand out way above the competition, cabin materials, ride quality, handling, the best tech, and superb refinement. It seems odd that every potential full-size pick-up owner doesn’t buy one, however, in case you are thinking it might be a bit soft with all this refinement, it doesn’t mean it can’t handle the tough stuff. It will tow up to an impressive 11,320 lbs. The 5.7-liter HEMI provides 395 hp and 410 ft-lbs through an excellent 8-speed transmission. Stomp on the gas from a standstill and you’ll get to sixty in 6.1 seconds and surprise a few “fast & furious” owners while doing it even though this is not what this truck is for.
The multi-function tailgate is extremely useful. It’s an option that allows the tailgate to be opened barn door style, split 70/30, making it much easier to get access to the bed. Of course, it still functions as a normal drop-down tailgate and a pull-out step on the left side makes for an easy hop into the back.
The RamBox Cargo Management System provides storage space above each of the rear wheels and can be locked. Stowage space inside each one is generous, and the driver’s side has a 3-pin power socket useful for those camping trips.
The Ram 1500’s interior isn’t any less eye-catching. The Laramie gets the 12.0-inch Uconnect central touchscreen housed in a high-quality, gold-colored surround. The Ram Laramie wears the subtle yet stylish black leather upholstery on the seats, dash, and center console, and there’s even a nice embroidered Ram logo atop the center armrest.
The Ram 1500’s cabin rivals that of many luxury cars we’ve driven. The leather has the same high-quality feel and finish as something more upscale, and both of those buckets offer heating and ventilation. There’s a ton of cargo space; the huge center console can hold up to a 15-inch laptop.
The interior is my favorite part of the Ram; the luxury is apparent, and you almost would think you’re not in a full-size pick-up at all. In fact, there is leather and suede everywhere on the inside including the doors and seat inserts. Seats have 8-way power, heating, and cooling, and back seat passengers get heated seats as well. Speaking of which, it’s positively palatial in the back, it’s limo like and the seats are actually comfortable not just an afterthought.
Pull up the split rear bench and there is a huge amount of space including a substantial cubby on both sides and storage space under the seat with a divider to stop things rolling around. It all been very well thought out.
Few setups are as good as the 12.0-inch touchscreen in this Ram. The massive screen runs the latest version of FCA’s intuitive Uconnect. The setup offers crystal clear graphics, iPhone-like touch responsiveness, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Plus, it’s one of the few screens in any car that has split functionality, meaning you can run CarPlay on the top portion of the screen and any of the baked-in functions on the lower half.
This Laramie has several options checked including the Trailer Tow Group (braking, steering, tire pressure monitoring, reverse steering control). It also has a full suite of safety systems: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert system, Lane Keep Assist, Parallel Park, and Perpendicular Park Assist with Stop and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Checking the Laramie Level 2 Group gets you a Harmon Kardon 19 speaker system, 4G LTE WIFI, Auto High Beams, Heated Second row, and a whole lot of other goodies. Additional equipment includes a 7.0-inch digital display within the instrument cluster, a wireless charger, located just in front of the center console, and three 115-volt outlets.
As the benchmark for durability, technology, efficiency, performance, and convenience with features never before offered in a pickup, the Ram 1500 continues to offer its customers the most award-winning pickup on the market.
Verdict – This is a great truck and I say that as someone who isn’t really a truck person but there’s something very special about the Ram, they have honed their art well – it is simply outstanding.
