If there were any doubt as to Volvo’s ascendance to that of a bona-fide luxury automaker, a few moments within the cabin of this top-tier 2019 XC90 Inscription will dash that. You could frame this interior and hang it in a gallery. There’s not much this side of a Rolls or Bentley that comes close, and while those British icons are a bit olde-worldey, this Swede exudes a modern Nordic ethic that drips with chic design, enchanting material choices and obsession to detail.
Four-cylinder power in a full-size, seven-seat luxury AWD SUV? Well, the Swede’s have always done things their own way, and while the XC90 looks somewhat conventional, there’s plenty here that marches to it’s own ABBA song.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder is pressurized with both supercharging and turbocharging, thus covering all regions of the rev range. High tech stuff. Rated at 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from 2,200 to 5,400 rpm, this engine punches way above is weight class. Hooked to Volvo’s own eight-speed automatic, it does a commendable job of moving the XC90 down the road with gusto.
POLESTAR ENGINEERED OPTIMIZATIONS: Five key functions have been optimized to provide faster response, better balance and more intuitive driving. This results in a car that responds quickly and predictably, which is important for those who engage in active driving, whether on the racetrack or on the road.
In keeping with Volvo tradition, the multi-adjustable, climate-controlled front seats in perforated Nappa leather are superb. With inflatable side bolsters, lumbar, and cushion extension, once you find your happy place you won’t want to leave.
The nine-inch, iPad-like centre screen theoretically does away with the need for most hard buttons. It’s a slick set up with three major menu screens — a finger-swipe to the right or left calls up the secondary screens. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the centre binnacle behind the steering wheel features a pin-sharp 12.3-inch digital screen with two virtual gauges and comprehensive info for the driver.
The Volvo’s third row perches are reasonably accommodating, being nicely padded and raised up, ensuring prisoners — err, occupants — have a decent view forwards. Access is tight, but in the Volvo’s favour the second row seats slide forward with one motion. No powered third row seat backs however, so pulling them up from the hatch requires a long reach. With all seats folded, cargo space within this Volvo is cavernous.
As an aesthetic piece, the Volvo XC90 Inscription is a triumph, embracing its occupants in high style and high comfort. You never fail to feel special when piloting this Swede. What they have done here with the XC90 is quite remarkable.
