2019 North American Truck of the Year: The 2019 Ram 1500 beat out the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 to take home the title of 2019 North American Truck of the Year. The panel of 54 judges, which was made up of U.S. and Canadian automotive journalists, vetted the contenders on characteristics including design, safety, segment leadership, handling, innovation, value, and driver satisfaction.
“Ram continues to lead the way in making a big truck double as a big family pleaser with as much attention paid to interior conveniences and ride comfort as to cargo hauling and towing,” said MotorWeek.
The new Ram 1500 Sport is so quiet and smooth, it’s like finding a bit of country in the middle of a city. Listen. Hear that? It is the sound of silence hindered by just a whiff of wind tumbling over the big mirrors in our Canadian-exclusive 2019 Ram 1500 Sport. Traveling at 100 km/h, the new truck is quieter than a barn full of hay. The smoothness that compliments all this quiet almost makes the truck feel like an EV. Or a tall Bentley. Aside from the silence, the 2019 Ram 1500 gets a long parade of advancements over the 2018 Sport.
The Ram is still big, including an additional 102 mm to the Crew Cab’s length for extra legroom, along with an extra 38-millimetre box height that simultaneously improves aerodynamics.
The handsome interior includes a massive centre console with sliding inserts, and you can open it up enough to hold a laptop or small backpack. There are storage bins under the floor, dual glove boxes and two 115-volt outlets in the cabin.
Front CENTER CONSOLE: Drivers of Ram 1500 models equipped with bucket seats will enjoy a next-generation level of convenience and technology—with a center console designed around occupant comfort and need. Now more than 50 percent larger than the previous generation, this dynamic piece of equipment offers dozens of functions and conveniences, starting with numerous different storage combinations. A three-position sliding cup holder tray can be stowed under the center armrest, revealing a deep storage bin that can hold a 15-inch laptop. Lifting the lid of the center armrest also reveals an additional rubber-lined storage bin, perfectly sized to fit a tablet. At the rear of the console, you’ll find two additional cup holders, media outlets and the ability to mount an iPad® for convenient rear-seat viewing.
It’s pretty much everything a truck should be: it’s quiet, with just enough of a V8 growl; the ride is well-planted and controlled; the shifts are smooth; and the interior is comfortable. Hooking up a trailer is far more work than actually pulling it, and as with virtually all trucks today, the Ram handles loads without breaking a sweat and without any float at the front wheels. Toggles on the steering wheel let you lock out high gears when you let the transmission do everything itself, and you can also use them for manual shift mode to sequentially shift it yourself.
THE STRONGEST RAM 1500 EVER: All-new Ram 1500: 98 percent of the steel used in the frame is high-strength steel, as is 38 percent of the steel used in the cab and box. The result is a reduction in weight without the sacrifice of durability and toughness Ram truck drivers depend on. Aluminum is used in the hood and tailgate to further reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.
The 2019 model is, of course, far more attractive with that newly sculpted face, cool LED tail lights and a taller box that carries a singular shoulder line across the truck. The taller box also helps with aerodynamics, but so many other things have been improved — towing, payload, space, technology, braking, aerodynamics, instrumentation, storage; even the flow rate of the HVAC system gets better.
Much like the rest of the interior, the rear seats truly are fit for kings and queens. It’s almost too nice back there for kids, who get multiple ports to power electronics. And when the kids in the back do eventually fall asleep, the only thing you’ll hear is their breathing.
Ram has done a good job on this truck: it rides and handles well, it doesn’t feel big and bulky, and the interior is comfortable. And, with the V8 inside it, this Ram feels just right. And the only-in-Canada trim is a pretty cool brag-tag as well.
