The eight speed is very responsive and it doesn’t mind bouncing off the redline when called upon (traction control off) and the paddle shifters are fun to play with. Hell, the entire dash makes you feel like you’re in something special — something fast. Let’s face it, the 2019 Dodge Challenger GT AWD is a lot more fun to hang with over your average crossover. And, it’s affordable too.
For decades, Dodge Challengers have stood for standing out. They led the first muscle-car revolution by being different, by offering the unexpected, by having a different voice altogether and daring to amplify it. Today, these powerful performers stand apart in a sea of meeker vehicles by championing the provocative, by having the courage to be different enough to build modern-day marvels that are engineered with more passion, precision and performance than ever before.
More than 90 percent of today’s vehicles can’t be called unique, as if you squint they look like half a dozen others. But you can’t say that about the Challenger, which features a bold design unlike anything else on the road, and truly screams “look at me” even from a distance.
In the 2019 Dodge Challenger, you can have all the performance, power and good looks of a traditional muscle car with the interior room and comfort of a large sedan. Unlike the Mustang and Camaro, the Challenger offers all-wheel drive.
Interior: You’d never know that the Challenger was capable of shenanigans from its pleasant and comfortable interior. The touch screen in the center is an old friend, enhanced this year with Uconnect 8.4, which brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s a retro feel that still looks modern, and we like the big driver-info center between the main gauges. No doubt, the thick rear pillars take some getting used to, but blind-spot warning and a rearview camera make the Challenger easy to drive. The rear seat can actually fit three across, unusual for this class, and the trunk is enormous.
Exterior: The Challenger’s classic long-hood/short-deck proportions and wide stance grumble “performance” in every single model, and with their flared fenders and other details. Details like hood scoops, badging and stripes throw in a retro feel. It just looks cool, successfully fighting the urge to be overly old-fashioned, and remains sleek and modern with a timeless appeal and the masculine swagger of an MMA champion.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE – We all know muscle cars are all about blistering straight-line performance, but the Challenger GT models with all-wheel drive take a different tack. This feature not only improves the Challenger’s cornering and handling, but also winter-weather driving ability, something no other muscle car offers.
Challenger GT All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the first AWD muscle coupes ever and delivers massive control exactly when you need it. The advanced automatic front-axle disconnect system technologically, intuitively and seamlessly transitions between RearWheel Drive (RWD) and AWD without driver intervention. Under normal driving conditions, the front axle is disengaged, and 100 percent of the engine’s torque is directed to the rear wheels. When sensors indicate more traction is needed, the system automatically engages the front axle and instantly transitions to AWD mode. Challenger GT AWD vehicles also employ Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), which provides exceptional traction on slippery surfaces while helping the driver maintain
the desired vehicle path. These systems work with the vehicles’ Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to deliver precise front-to-rear torque control while preserving the vehicles’ unrelenting drive.
Fittingly, the look of the Challenger can be made even bolder through its flamboyant paint scheme you won’t find elsewhere. The Challenger is meant to stand out, not blend in.
If you’re looking for a daily driver two-coupe with awesome styling and performance that you can take on just about anything Mother Nature throws down, the Challenger GT AWD is your all-season muscle machine. And when you run into someone who claims a V6-powered machine can’t be a muscle car, just reach into the glove box and show them your timeslips, along with the snow brush in the backseat.
It’s time to put the pedal to the metal. THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE DOMESTIC AND NOT DOMESTICATED.
