If you believe life is too short to drive an ugly car, you’ll like the 2018 Mazda3. Playful and sophisticated, the 2018 Mazda3 is a fuel-efficient compact that’s one of the most fun-to-drive cars in its class.

The versatile 5-door hatchback offers impressive standard features, many tech-based active safety systems, and a refined interior. The Grand Touring gets a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that produces 184 horsepower and the more popular 6-speed automatic transmission.

If you want more than four wheels and a steering wheel. If you want to like your car. If you want to want your car. If you want to feel something when you drive your car. If you believe life is too short to drive an ugly car you’ll like the 2018 Mazda3.

Thanks to Mazda’s innovative Skyactiv powertrain and chassis design, the 2018 Mazda3 is both fun to drive and fuel-efficient. The Mazda3’s precise steering, finely honed suspension, and strong brakes assure a good time. Unlike the VW GTI or Ford Focus ST, the Mazda3 hatchback doesn’t sacrifice a smooth, comfortable ride at the altar of great handling. The Mazda3 soaks up road irregularities well, even with the 18-inch wheels and tires, and it cruises well on the highway. The 6-speed is one of the best in the industry and is matched in efficiency and fun with manual mode.

Favorite Features:
TOP SAFETY PICK+ – The Mazda3 may be Mazda’s smallest and least expensive model, but it has received the highest safety ratings for crash impact by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Mazda3 earned 5 Stars from NHTSA and a rating of Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS.

VERSATILE HATCHBACK BODY STYLE – Many compacts are only available as 4-door sedans, but the sportier hatchback body style has made a recent resurgence in this class. The Mazda3 hatchback has one of the largest cargo volumes in the segment, with 20.2 cubic feet of space behind the back seat and 47.1 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Interior: This is one of the best interiors in this class. The Mazda3’s cabin is warm and refined, with an upscale, expensive look and feel. All models feature a large 7-inch screen on the dash. Infotainment functions, like audio, phone, apps, and navigation, are controlled by an easy-to-operate rotary knob on the console between the front seats, just like some luxury brands. Seat comfort is high. Rear-seat legroom is a bit tight, but there’s room for two average-size adults, three in a pinch. All models have a 60/40-split-folding rear seat.

Standard features on the 2018 Mazda3 Sport include electronic parking brake, the Mazda Connect infotainment system with 7-inch screen, Bluetooth and audio streaming, rearview camera, push-button start and Smart City Brake Support, which will brake for you in an emergency under 19 mph. The Mazda3 GT adds features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and heated front seats, power sunroof, Bose audio, head-up display and perforated leather upholstery.

The Grand Touring with the Premium Equipment package that adds self-leveling LED headlights, adaptive front lighting, a heated steering wheel, paddle shifters and a navigation system, Bose 9-speaker audio system, a rear spoiler, shark-fin antenna and a power sunroof.

Which 3 does Edmunds recommend? We’re partial to the hatchback for its cargo-carrying flexibility and aesthetic appeal. Among the different trim level choices, the Grand Touring is a great pick that is eligible for various advanced safety features.

THE VERDICT: The Mazda 3 was created by the same design team as the rest of Mazda’s modern family of cars. It looks gorgeous for the segment. Despite working with a short, front-wheel drive platform — terrible for proportions — the wizards at Mazda HQ managed to create an athletic and svelte hatchback shape. Heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a heads-up display, radar cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring are all included. It also has premium materials throughout and looks more expensive than its price tag would suggest.
