If you’re looking for one of the most comfortable rides found on a big truck, the 2016 Ram 1500’s ingenious coil-spring and multi-link rear suspension delivers it. The Ram’s steering and road manners are among best-in-class, too. The air-spring suspension provides optimal load leveling. When so equipped, the Ram can level a loaded bed, make cabin entry easier and even help improve fuel economy by reducing drag. The 5.7-liter V-8 generates 395 hp and 407 lb-ft. Known as the “Hemi” for its hemispherical combustion chambers, the V-8 is the best choice for towing and it offers the quickest acceleration performance. The new Laramie Limited trim is a perfect example of how Ram directly responds to customer input with the highest level of luxury available in pickups. The Limited is the ‘black-tie’ luxury alternative to the popular southwestern-themed Laramie Longhorn edition pickup. The Ram LIMITED’s cabin is as good as it gets in the pickup segment. Seasoned truck owners might be thrown off at first by the rotary shift knob on the dashboard, but it quickly becomes second nature, and it frees up useful storage space compared to trucks with console-mounted shifters. The front seats themselves are soft, yet strike an adequate balance between support and comfort. The crew cab’s rear seat is very comfortable, offering loads of legroom and an agreeable seatback angle.
INTERIOR: The mandatory all-black interior (including headliner and pillars) includes black Natura Plus premium leather seats with unique pinstripe stitching; Graystone leather piping rides the stitching peaks to relieve the blackness. As with the Longhorn, Laramie Limited has rear flap-closure seatback map pockets, with modern chrome Ram-lettered buckles. CAR & DRIVER REVIEW: The Ram stands out with comfortable cabins and a smooth ride. The Ram is easily distinguished from the others with its Freightliner looks. Its interior looks fantastic and features a big screen and controls that make it among the most intuitive to operate. Ride quality may be the smoothest in the class. The Ram’s air suspension and the feature that lowers the truck at speed in the name of fuel savings is extra nice. We appreciate its automatic load-leveling, especially when towing, and the key-fob button that lets you lower the truck’s rear for easier loading and unloading. The truck can also be raised for more ground clearance or lowered fully when stopped to make it easier for passengers to get in and out.
A big 8.4-inch touchscreen that incorporates Uconnect Access, adding on a host of features including voice recognition, apps, and wi-fi hotspot capability. The navigation system offers voice-activated features, 3-D terrain imagery, lane guidance, fuel prices, weather reports, sports scores, movie information through Sirius Travel Link. There’s also a 7.0-inch configurable gauge cluster that replaces a conventional gauge cluster and can quickly communicate information with loads of customization and up to three readouts at a time. For example, the driver might configure the transmission temperature gauge to be in the foreground when towing. An auxiliary port is provided, along with ports for USB and SD cards and iPod control via USB. A rotary shift knob is used to control the automatic transmission. Twisting it switches from “Park” to “Drive.” It is more space-efficient and is designed to be easy to use when wearing work gloves.
Cubby space for storage is abundant. Bins can be found above the center stack and ahead of the center console, along with big cupholders, large door pockets, and other trays. The center console on bucket-seat models holds an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, and there are charge ports everywhere. The dash is well-designed and attractive. The Ram seems to get better attention to detail and quality than the other pickups.
From the driver seat, the Ram feels more refined than its competitors, as its ride quality is smoother and steering more precise than you’d expect in a full-size truck. Running at speed on the freeway, the Ram 1500 is impressively quiet and composed. It gets even better when fitted with the air suspension, a unique feature for this class that allows the truck to drop 2 inches to ease liftover and step-in heights when parked. Two off-road settings for the air suspension also allow increases of 1.2 and 2 inches above the standard height for extra clearance.
